If you want to know what census indexes to state and federal census records exist, this web page shows what is available. Some census records have been destroyed or are missing. When this is the case, it is noted. Please see our state census page for a listing of the state and local censuses that have been taken.
Federal Census Indexes exist for the census years 1790 - 1870. They are almost exclusively head-of-household. They do, however, list adults who had a surname different from the head-of-household and will usually pickup a child who had a surname different from the head-of-household. These indexes have been produced by various companies over the last 30 years. We have complete collection of all the available census indexes and can conduct a Census Index Search for you.
State Census Indexes, Tax Lists, Eligible Voter Lists, etc. exist for a few areas. When indexes to any of these have been compiled, it is noted.
Soundexes exist for most, but not all, states and years for the time period 1880 - 1920. Soundexes are microfilmed card indexes that list the head of household and those residing within the household. They are on 16 millimeter microfilm. Prior to microfilming, information about the household was hand written on a Soundex Card. The head-of-households surname was then converted to a "Soundex Code" according to rules that are known as the Soundex Rules. The cards were then sorted by the given name of the head-of-household. Soundex coding is a process whereby the surname is grouped with other like sounding names. This has the advantage of bringing together names which, though spelled differently, are essentially the same, e.g. Stewart, Steuart, and Stuart. Please note the following:
